Bronx, NY (July 15, 2025) – A multi-vehicle crash in the Bronx left one woman dead and several others injured on Friday evening.
The incident occurred around 5:30 p.m. on Bartow Ave in the Co-Op City area. Authorities say a 79-year-old man was driving a 2003 Toyota Avalon westbound when he collided with a 2020 Hyundai Sonata. The Toyota then struck a 2011 Acura RDX before crashing into a light pole.
The collision caused the Hyundai to slam into a parked, unoccupied vehicle. The crash involved eight people total, including drivers and passengers from all vehicles.
Medics transported the Toyota driver, his front-seat passenger—a 69-year-old woman—and his back-seat passenger, 71-year-old Stella Nyarko-Dei, to Jacobi Medical Center. Nyarko-Dei, who lived nearby, tragically died from her injuries.
The Hyundai driver, a 38-year-old woman, and her 11-year-old front-seat passenger were also taken to Jacobi Medical Center. The Acura’s 34-year-old driver and her two passengers, aged 24 and 34, were hospitalized as well.
All injured survivors were reported to be in stable condition. Police say all drivers remained at the scene. No arrests were made, and the investigation is ongoing. We extend our deepest condolences to the family of Stella Nyarko-Dei and hope for the full recovery of the injured.
Multi-Vehicle Crashes in the Bronx

According to the New York State DMV, thousands of injury crashes occur across the Bronx each year. In dense neighborhoods like Co-Op City, heavy congestion and busy intersections make conditions especially risky. Common factors that lead to multi-car accidents include:
- Driver Error: Misjudgments in speed or distance often cause chain-reaction collisions.
- Elderly Drivers: Some older drivers may have delayed reaction times or impaired vision.
- Failure to Yield: Crashes can occur when drivers don’t yield at intersections or merge properly.
- Mechanical Problems: Issues like brake failure or steering loss may contribute to loss of control.
- Speeding: Driving too fast reduces time to react and increases the force of a crash.
