Gowanus, NY (September 15, 2025) – A deadly three-car crash in Gowanus, Brooklyn, left one man dead and several others injured on Sunday evening, September 14, just after 6:30 p.m.
The accident occurred at the intersection of 2nd Avenue and 9th Street. Investigators say the driver of a Honda Odyssey, heading north on 2nd Avenue, collided with a Mercedes-Benz that was crossing 9th Street. The force of the crash pushed the Mercedes into a Dodge, and one of the vehicles quickly caught fire.
The New York Fire Department firefighters rushed to the burning vehicle. Emergency responders had to pull someone from the wreckage to safety.
The driver of the Mercedes, 34-year-old Arturo Alberto Baez Cordero of Lodi, New Jersey, was rushed to the hospital, but tragically did not survive his injuries. A 38-year-old woman in the Honda remains in critical condition. Two other men from the Honda, along with the 49-year-old driver of the Dodge, are listed in stable condition.
Police arrested the Honda’s driver, 38-year-old Alexey Ivanov of Brooklyn, later that evening. He faces multiple charges, including manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide, assault, reckless endangerment, obstruction of governmental administration, reckless driving, and disobeying a traffic control device.
The investigation remains active, and police continue to gather evidence to determine the cause of the crash.
We offer our deepest condolences to the deceased victim’s family and also wish for a full and swift recovery for those injured.
Fatal Car Accidents in New York
Fatal accidents like this one are devastating, not just for the victims but for their families as well. Losing a loved one due to someone else’s reckless actions can leave families struggling with grief, emotional pain, and financial hardship.
If you’ve lost a loved one in a tragic accident like this, a wrongful death lawyer can help guide you through the legal process and pursue compensation for your loss.
When pursuing a wrongful death claim, several types of compensation may be available:
- Funeral and Burial Expenses: The unexpected loss of a loved one can bring significant costs, such as funeral and burial expenses. A wrongful death claim can help cover these costs so families can focus on grieving
- Medical Expenses: If the deceased received medical treatment before passing away, their medical bills may be covered as part of the wrongful death claim. This includes emergency room visits, surgeries, and hospital stays.
- Loss of Financial Support: If the deceased was a primary wage earner, their family may suffer from a loss of income. Compensation can help replace the income the deceased would have provided to support their family.
- Loss of Companionship and Emotional Distress: The family members of the deceased can seek compensation for the emotional pain and suffering caused by the loss of their loved one. This includes loss of companionship, comfort, and support.
- Punitive Damages: In cases where the defendant’s actions were especially reckless, such as in this accident involving a charged driver, punitive damages may be awarded. These damages are designed to punish the wrongdoer and prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
The grief of losing a loved one in a sudden, tragic accident can be overwhelming. Pursuing a wrongful death claim can provide some financial relief while also holding the responsible party accountable for their actions.
