Pedestrian Accidents in New Jersey

Pedestrian fatalities remain a pressing concern in New Jersey, especially on heavily traveled routes. Intersections and high-traffic roads create dangerous conditions for people on foot.
Several factors often contribute to deadly pedestrian crashes, including:
- Driver distraction – Phones, navigation systems, and other distractions can steal a driver’s attention for just a few seconds. Even a brief lapse is enough to miss a pedestrian crossing and cause a fatal accident.
- Speeding – A driver traveling over the speed limit has less time to react to unexpected hazards. Higher speeds also increase the force of impact, making pedestrian injuries far more likely to be fatal.
- Poor visibility – Darkness in the early morning hours, heavy rain, or glare from headlights can all reduce visibility. When drivers cannot clearly see the road, pedestrians are at greater risk of not being noticed in time.
- Failure to yield – Intersections and crosswalks are designed to protect pedestrians, but many crashes occur because drivers fail to yield. Ignoring right-of-way laws puts people on foot directly in harm’s way.
- Alcohol or drug impairment – Impaired drivers have slower reaction times and poor judgment. Even at lower speeds, impairment can prevent a driver from stopping in time to avoid hitting someone crossing the street.
When families lose a loved one in such a preventable event, they may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim. Compensation can help with funeral expenses, lost financial support, and the emotional suffering families endure after such a loss.
