New Jersey requires automobile policies to include Personal Injury Protection, or PIP, which can pay medical expenses for covered people injured in an automobile accident regardless of who was at fault. Depending on the policy, PIP may also provide benefits for certain lost wages and necessary services.
PIP can be particularly relevant when injuries require medical attention before questions about fault are resolved. New Jersey insurance rules provide for reimbursement of medically necessary treatment for injuries from a covered automobile accident, and it is held to the policy's limits and applicable requirements.
The amount and type of available PIP benefits depend on the policy selected. New Jersey policies can have different medical limits, deductibles, and options concerning health insurance as primary coverage, so it is important to review the specific policy when determining how treatment may be paid.
Keeping medical records, bills, and insurance documents can help establish what treatment was received and which benefits were used. When questions arise about coverage or a separate claim against another driver, a car accident lawyer can review the applicable policy and explain how New Jersey's insurance rules may affect the available options.
