Brooklyn, NY – Senior Killed, Multiple Hurt in Multi-Vehicle Crash at Ave S & W 11th St

Brooklyn, NY (March 11, 2026) – A multi-vehicle accident involving a fire truck responding to an emergency left one person dead and several others injured on Tuesday evening, March 10, in the Gravesend section of Brooklyn.

The crash happened around 6:45 p.m. at the intersection of Avenue S and West 11th Street. New York Police said a fire truck traveling east on Avenue S with emergency lights activated collided with a commercial van heading north on West 11th Street.

The impact triggered a chain-reaction crash involving two additional vehicles. Officials said the fire truck struck the van, which caused the fire vehicle to veer into an Access-a-Ride bus. The bus then crashed into a Lexus SUV that was nearby.

Emergency crews responded quickly and began helping those involved. A 78-year-old passenger riding on the Access-a-Ride bus suffered severe injuries and was rushed to South Brooklyn Health in critical condition. Doctors later confirmed that the man died from his injuries.

Several other people were hurt in the crash. Police said three additional passengers on the Access-a-Ride bus and the bus driver were taken to South Brooklyn Health for treatment and were listed in stable condition.

The driver of the commercial van also suffered injuries and was transported to NYU Langone Hospital. The Lexus driver was taken to a nearby hospital as well. Officials reported that both individuals remained in stable condition after the crash.

Five firefighters riding in the responding fire truck were also hurt during the incident. Emergency responders took them to an area hospital, where medical staff treated their injuries. Authorities reported that all five firefighters were in stable condition.

Investigators have not yet determined what led to the collision or whether any violations occurred. Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash.

We extend our sincere condolences to the family of the man who lost his life in this accident.
