East Orange, NJ – Father Killed, Child Critically Injured in DUI Crash on S Grove St

East Orange, NJ (October 6, 2025) – A tragic collision on Saturday night, October 4, claimed the life of a 26-year-old father and left his young son fighting for his life.

Authorities said the crash happened at about 10:06 p.m. on South Grove Street when 34-year-old Kadeem Robinson of Bloomfield struck the victims with his minivan. The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office reported that Brian Hope, of East Orange, had been crossing the roadway with his three-year-old son when they were struck.

Hope was rushed to University Hospital in Newark, where he was pronounced dead shortly after midnight. His son remains hospitalized in critical condition.

Officials also confirmed that three passengers inside the minivan sustained injuries. The impact additionally pushed the vehicle into a box truck, leaving the truck driver hurt.

Robinson now faces multiple charges, including first-degree vehicular homicide within 1,000 feet of a school, two counts of second-degree assault by auto while driving intoxicated within 1,000 feet of a school, and fourth-degree assault by auto.

The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office is continuing its investigation into the circumstances of this deadly crash.

We extend our deepest condolences to the family of Brian Hope during this heartbreaking time, and we hope for the child’s full recovery.

Wrongful Death Cases in New JerseyFather Killed, Child Critically Injured in DUI Crash on S Grove St

Tragedies like the one in East Orange highlight the devastating impact that impaired driving has on families and communities. Drunk driving accidents often lead to catastrophic injuries or loss of life, leaving victims’ loved ones with emotional trauma and overwhelming financial burdens.

In New Jersey, families who lose a loved one due to another driver’s reckless actions may pursue a wrongful death claim. This type of claim can provide compensation for:

  • Funeral and burial expenses: The cost of laying a loved one to rest can place a heavy financial burden on grieving families. Wrongful death claims can help cover these necessary expenses so families can focus on healing rather than finances.
  • Medical bills for emergency treatment prior to death: When a victim receives emergency care before passing, medical costs can accumulate quickly. Families may recover these expenses through a wrongful death claim to prevent overwhelming debt.
  • Loss of income and future financial support: If the deceased provided financial support, their passing leaves families facing sudden hardship. Compensation may help replace lost income and secure the future of surviving dependents.
  • Loss of companionship and emotional suffering: The absence of a loved one leaves an irreplaceable void in the lives of family members. Wrongful death claims recognize this emotional toll and may provide damages for the suffering endured.

Legal guidance can help families secure justice while holding negligent drivers accountable. A wrongful death lawyer gathers evidence, reviews crash reports, and works with experts to ensure victims’ families receive the compensation they deserve.
