Glassboro, NJ (August 5, 2025) – A tragic crash in Glassboro on Sunday night, August 3, resulted in one death and two injuries. The incident occurred at approximately 11:10 p.m. on Mullica Hill Road (Route 322) near Campus Crossings apartments. Police say the crash involved a 2008 Mazda coupe and a 2005 Toyota.
According to investigators, the driver of the Mazda, 27-year-old John Bessel from Wilmington, crossed over the center line while travelling eastbound and collided with the westbound Toyota. After the collision, the Mazda skidded sideways and struck a nearby utility pole. Bessel was pronounced dead at the scene.
The passenger in Bessel’s vehicle, as well as the driver of the Toyota, both sustained injuries and were taken to a nearby hospital. Authorities suspect that Bessel’s temporary loss of consciousness due to narcotic use may have contributed to the crash. Investigators believe that Bessel regained consciousness while on the wrong side of the road, leading to the collision.
The crash resulted in power outages in the area, leaving some residents without electricity. Crews worked throughout the night to restore power, while the roadway remained closed for several hours to facilitate the investigation and cleanup.
Police continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and our thoughts are with those affected by this tragic event.
