Mahwah, NJ – Lauren Kopko Killed in Fatal Crash on Rte 287

Mahwah, NJ (January 17, 2025) – A fatal multi-vehicle crash occurred on Thursday, January 16, on Route 287 North near milepost 66.3, claiming the life of a Connecticut woman and involving a chain-reaction collision. The New Jersey State Police have confirmed the incident, which took place at approximately 5:42 p.m. and involved a Freightliner tractor-trailer, a Honda Civic, an Audi S5, and a Ford F-350.  

According to Sgt. Jeffrey Lebron of the New Jersey State Police, the tractor-trailer hit the rear of a Honda Civic driven by Lauren Kopko, 40, of Stratford, CT. This initial collision caused a chain reaction, involving the Audi and Ford vehicles. Tragically, Kopko sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead shortly after being transported to a nearby hospital by emergency medical personnel.  

The driver of the Audi S5 sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene, while no injuries were reported from the Ford F-350. Firefighters assisted with vehicle extrication efforts, and law enforcement managed traffic flow and secured the scene. The northbound lanes of Rte 287 were closed for several hours as authorities investigated the crash and cleared the wreckage. 

The New Jersey State Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision.
