New York, NY (July 21, 2025) – Two people lost their lives early Saturday after a car hit a cyclist and a pedestrian in Manhattan’s Chinatown neighbourhood.
Around 7:30 a.m. on July 19, a blue Chevy Malibu sped westbound over the Manhattan Bridge. After entering Manhattan, the vehicle struck a male cyclist and a female pedestrian seated on a bench at Canal Street and Broadway.
Emergency crews responded quickly, but both victims died at the scene. Authorities identified the pedestrian as 63-year-old May Kwok and the cyclist as 55-year-old Kevin Scott Cruickshank.
The crash caused severe damage to the Chevy and an unoccupied NYPD van parked nearby. Witnesses said the impact sent the police vehicle and the bench flying across the street. Debris and personal belongings covered the area.
Witnesses reported that the driver and passenger, both women in their 20s, tried to walk away after the crash. Police arrested both on Elizabeth Street, a block away. The driver had not been charged at last report, but the 22-year-old passenger faces charges for unauthorised vehicle use and weapon possession.
Officials said the vehicle was a rental with Wisconsin plates.
Our hearts go out to the families of both victims during this incredibly difficult time. The NYPD is continuing to investigate the events leading up to this devastating collision.
Pedestrian and Bicycle Accidents in Manhattan
New York City is one of the busiest urban areas in the country, with millions of people walking, biking, and driving every day. While this constant movement supports local businesses and communities, it also creates a higher risk of pedestrian and cyclist accidents, especially in densely populated areas like Manhattan. Intersections such as Canal St and Broadway see heavy traffic throughout the day, making them dangerous for vulnerable road users.
According to data from New York City’s Department of Transportation, hundreds of pedestrians and cyclists are injured or killed in traffic collisions each year. Many of these accidents occur due to driver negligence, such as speeding, failing to yield, or distracted driving. In cases where drivers act recklessly or operate vehicles without authorisation, as seen in the tragic incident involving the rental car in Chinatown, victims and their families often face immense pain, financial hardship, and unanswered questions.
For those injured in a pedestrian crash or for families who have lost a loved one in such an incident, a pedestrian accident attorney can be a vital resource. A lawyer can help investigate what happened, collect evidence like traffic camera footage or witness statements, and hold the at-fault parties accountable. In fatal cases, a wrongful death claim may provide compensation for funeral costs, lost income, emotional suffering, and more.
Victims may also be entitled to compensation for hospital bills, long-term medical care, and pain and suffering. Legal support, such as the one we offer and provide at Metro Law, can ease the burden of dealing with insurance companies and complex legal procedures while allowing families to focus on healing.
