Long Island, NY – Three Killed, Five Injured in Auto Collision on Sunrise Hwy
Long Island, NY (August 9, 2023) – A tragic accident that occurred on a highway in Long Island took three lives and hurt five others. Police reported the accident just before 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, August 6.
Footage from the crash scene shows fire crews surrounding an overturned vehicle with extensive damage. The wreck occurred on the Sunrise Highway in Massapequa, according to reports.
First responders had to cut into one of the vehicles involved in order to free the victims inside. What caused the incident was not immediately apparent, however, detectives say all involved vehicles were headed west near a shopping center, with two vehicles stopped in the center lane at a red light.
That’s when a Hyundai operated by a 32-year-old individual traveling at a high speed rear-ended the back of a vehicle occupied by six family members, including a father and his children and grandchild. That vehicle then crashed into the car in front of them, identified as a Chevrolet Malibu operated by a man, age 83. The vehicle operated by the family then flipped over and crashed into yet another vehicle.
The driver of the family-occupied vehicle lost his life in the collision. He was identified as Patrice Huntley, 60, of Queens. His daughter, age 13, was also pronounced deceased on-site. His 10-year-old son was transported to the hospital with critical injuries, where he was later pronounced deceased.
His 6-year-old granddaughter and another one of his children, age 18, were rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. One other child of Huntley’s, age 14, was also taken to the hospital with rib and back injuries.
The 83-year-old driver in front of them was also injured in the accident. Emergency personnel worked for hours at the crash scene, causing significant delays in traffic.
Police in Long Island continue to investigate the cause of the accident.
We want to offer our sincere condolences to the deceased victims’ families at this time. We hope for the full recovery of those with injuries.
New York Auto Collisions
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration issued a report stating that the United States has seen an 11% increase in car accidents since 2015. Every year, over 6 million car crashes are reported in the country that injure more than 3 million people. Sadly, about 40,000 people are killed in these accidents per year. Driver negligence is the leading cause of car wrecks in the United States, causing 90-99% of all reported car crashes.
Negligent drivers are one of the leading causes of New York auto accidents that end in serious personal injury. Whether it’s a driver who is speeding, texting, or simply not following traffic laws, their blatant indifference toward others often leads to collisions that could have been avoided. Oftentimes, negligent drivers are forced to spend time in jail and pay steep fines related to their careless and/or reckless conduct.
As our country’s population keeps increasing, so does the amount of inexperienced, angry, careless, inattentive, and reckless drivers on our streets. Congested roadways are just one of the numerous factors attributed to the increased rate of auto collisions. Another common cause of negligently caused accidents is distraction, which has greatly increased since the rise of smartphones in the past decade.
When two or more motor vehicles crash into one another, there are often multiple victims that are badly injured, along with expensive property damage. In worst-case scenarios, injured crash victims end up losing their lives due to the severity of their injuries.
