Paterson, NJ (November 24, 2025) – A late-night crash in Paterson left one person dead and another in critical condition over the weekend. The collision happened shortly after 11 p.m. on November 22 at the intersection of Cianci Street and Market Street.
Authorities said two people rode on a moped when it collided with a tractor-trailer truck. The impact injured both riders. Emergency crews arrived soon after the crash and rushed the victims to St. Joseph’s University Medical Center. One victim, an adult male, later died at the hospital. The second victim, a juvenile, remained in critical condition as of the latest update.
The Passaic County Sheriff’s Office has not released the names of either rider. Investigators have also not shared what led to the collision or which vehicle had the right of way before impact.
Officers remained at the intersection to document evidence and speak with anyone who may have seen the crash. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances of the crash.
We extend our condolences to the family and friends grieving the man who died, and we also hope the young rider recovers swiftly.
Tractor-Trailer Accidents in New Jersey
Crashes involving tractor-trailers often turn deadly, especially when a smaller vehicle like a moped is involved. A tractor-trailer can weigh up to 80,000 pounds when loaded. A moped weighs only a fraction of that and offers almost no protection to riders. When these vehicles collide, riders face a high risk of catastrophic injury, even at lower speeds.
Paterson has many busy intersections where commercial trucks share tight streets with cars, bikes, and mopeds. At busy crossings, drivers and riders should react quickly to changing traffic patterns, headlights, and turns. A brief lapse in attention can have severe consequences.
Tractor-trailer collisions also raise complex legal issues. These cases may involve more than one responsible party. Depending on what investigators find, liability could fall on the truck driver, a trucking company, a maintenance provider, or another motorist who triggered the chain of events. Trucking companies often deploy their own investigators soon after a fatal crash. That can make it hard for families to get straight answers without support.
Families dealing with a fatal crash often face major burdens all at once:
- Funeral and burial expenses
- Medical bills from emergency care
- Loss of income and support the victim would have provided
- Emotional trauma and long-term grief for loved ones
When a collision results from negligence, victims and families may have the right to pursue compensation through a wrongful death claim. A compassionate wrongful death lawyer can gather crash reports, preserve evidence, review any camera footage, and work with reconstruction experts to clarify what happened. Legal help can protect families from unfair blame and push back against low settlement offers from insurers.
