Rye Brook, NY (September 9, 2024) – Authorities have arrested a driver in connection with a deadly wrong-way crash that occurred on the Hutchinson River Parkway in Rye Brook on the morning of September 8. Westchester County police confirmed that Jose Espinal, 48, of Bridgeport, Connecticut, has been charged with vehicular manslaughter and driving while intoxicated (DWI) following the tragic collision that claimed the life of another motorist.
The crash was first reported around 5:00 a.m. when multiple 911 calls alerted police to a vehicle heading southbound in the northbound lanes of the parkway. The wrong-way driver, identified as Espinal, crashed head-on into another vehicle about half a mile south of King Street in Rye Brook. The impact was severe, and when emergency responders arrived at the scene, they found the vehicle that had been hit engulfed in flames. Tragically, the driver of that vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene. Their identity has not yet been released, as authorities are still working to notify their next of kin.
Espinal, who survived the crash, was transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. His condition has not been made public, but he is expected to face serious legal consequences following his recovery. Charges were officially filed at approximately 10:10 AM on Sunday, September 8, when Westchester County police announced Espinal’s arrest.
The section of the Hutchinson River Parkway where the collision occurred was closed for several hours while police conducted their investigation. Traffic on the northbound side was diverted at Ridge Street, and one lane on the southbound side was also closed to allow investigators to examine the scene and clear the wreckage. The parkway has since reopened, but drivers in the area experienced significant delays throughout the morning. As the community mourns the loss of life in this preventable accident, it is crucial to remain informed and aware of the dangers of reckless driving.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased victim.
