5 Steps To Take After Being Injured in a Crash in Toms River, NJSerious Crash With Injuries Reported on Rte 37 in Toms River, NJ

After a serious crash in Toms River, the actions you take in the hours and days that follow can significantly affect your ability to recover, both physically and legally. Here are five steps worth taking as soon as you are able.

1- Seek medical attention immediately. Even if your injuries feel minor at the scene, get evaluated by a medical professional as soon as possible. Conditions like concussions, internal bleeding, and soft tissue damage may not produce obvious symptoms right away. A prompt medical visit also creates documentation that directly connects your injuries to the crash.

2- Document everything you can. If you are physically able, photograph the crash scene, vehicle damage, road conditions, and any visible injuries. Note the time, weather, and direction of travel of the vehicles involved. On a busy corridor like Route 37, traffic camera footage or dashcam recordings may also exist and should be requested before they are overwritten.

3- Gather contact and insurance information. Collect the names, phone numbers, license plate numbers, and insurance details of all drivers involved. Get contact information from any witnesses present. Do not rely on the police report alone, it may take days to become available and may not capture every detail.

4- Avoid giving recorded statements to insurers. Insurance adjusters usually contact you quickly after a crash. You are not required to provide a recorded statement, and doing so before speaking with an attorney can limit what you are able to recover later. This applies to your own insurer as well as the other driver’s.

5- Speak with a personal injury attorney. New Jersey’s statute of limitations sets a deadline for filing personal injury claims, so consulting an attorney early helps protect your options. A car accident lawyer can handle insurer communications, gather evidence, and explain what compensation may be available for your medical costs, lost wages, and other losses.
