Wayne, NJ (October 17, 2024) – An injury car crash occurred on Thursday morning when a man collided with a New Jersey Transit-operated bus in Wayne, resulting in significant injuries for both the driver and a passenger. The incident was reported by the Wayne Police Department and took place around 9:30 a.m. on Alps Rd.
According to authorities, 43-year-old Jeremy Caban was driving a Mazda 6 when he crossed the center line and struck the bus. First responders quickly arrived at the scene, and both Caban and his passenger were transported to Saint Joseph’s Medical Center in Paterson for treatment of serious injuries.
The bus driver sustained minor injuries, and fortunately, there were no passengers aboard at the time of the collision. An NJ Transit spokesperson confirmed that the bus was operated by Academy, which is under contract with NJT.
Wayne Police reported that Caban was found to be under the influence and in possession of suspected heroin at the time of the crash. He has been charged with two counts of assault by auto, possession of a controlled dangerous substance, being under the influence of a controlled dangerous substance, and possession of drug paraphernalia. Additionally, he faces several traffic violations, including DUI, careless driving, reckless driving, and failure to maintain a lane. Authorities noted that Caban was not wearing his seat belt during the accident.
Firefighters assisted at the scene, ensuring the safe extraction of the vehicles involved and helping to control traffic until the situation was stabilized.
