Young Driver Hospitalized After Rte 17 Crash in Hackensack, NJ

July 8, 2026

Hackensack, NJ (July 8, 2026) – On Tuesday night, July 7, a two-vehicle crash left a young driver hospitalized at the southbound Route 17 entrance to Route 80. The crash happened around 10:30 p.m. when one sedan reportedly cut in front of the other while merging onto Route 80 at the last moment.

The driver who was struck was taken away by ambulance wearing a neck brace, witnesses said. The extent of the injuries has not been released.

Both vehicles were removed from the roadway by Bergen Brookside Towing using flatbeds. No further details about the collision were available at the time of publication.

Hackensack Police continue to investigate the crash.

We wish the injured driver a full and steady recovery.

How Does New Jersey's Modified Comparative Negligence Standard Work in a Crash?Young Driver Hospitalized After Rte 17 Crash

New Jersey follows a modified comparative negligence rule, which means an injured driver can still recover damages as long as they are found 50% or less at fault for the crash. If a driver is assigned 51% or more of the blame, they are barred from recovering anything, even if the other driver also contributed to what happened.

For any recovery allowed, the final award is reduced by the injured driver's own percentage of fault. So a driver found 20% responsible for a crash with $50,000 in damages would recover $40,000 instead of the full amount.

Insurance adjusters frequently look for any detail that shifts even a small percentage of fault onto the injured party, since every point can reduce what they ultimately have to pay.

This is where witness statements become especially important. Medical records that document the injury will also matter, both to establish the extent of harm and to counter any argument that the injury was less serious than described.

Because comparative fault disputes commonly play out through negotiation with insurance companies rather than in court, a car accident lawyer can be useful for pushing back when an insurer tries to inflate a driver's share of the blame.

At Metro Law, we have worked with many drivers across New Jersey navigating fault disputes after a collision. We can help you understand what your options may be and how to move forward.
