North Brunswick, NJ (July 16, 2026) – A chlorine leak at a shopping center on Milltown Road sent seven injured people to the hospital on Thursday morning, July 16.
North Brunswick police, fire and EMS were called to the shopping center, home to businesses including LA Fitness, Lidl, Dollar Tree, a salon, and a bakery. Four of the seven people hurt were taken to hospital for treatment.
The chlorine leak has since been contained. There were no road closures, but shoppers were asked to steer clear of the shopping center, particularly near LA Fitness, while emergency units worked to clear the air.
What caused the leak is still being examined. Details on the hospitalized people's status were not released.
We wish those affected by this chlorine leak incident a rapid and total recovery.

Chemical exposure cases in North Brunswick, NJ can raise questions of premises liability, which means the property owner or business operating on site may be held responsible for failing to maintain safe conditions. This can include improper storage or handling of the chemical or a failure to inspect and repair faulty equipment.
People exposed to chlorine gas, as it happened here, can experience a range of health effects, from coughing and eye irritation to more serious respiratory damage depending on how long they were exposed and how concentrated the leak was.
Some effects, like lung irritation, may not become fully apparent until hours after exposure, which is why medical follow-up matters even for those who initially feel fine.
A personal injury lawyer can help someone exposed to a chemical leak determine who may be responsible, whether that's the shopping center's management, a maintenance contractor, or another business on site. An attorney can also help explain what types of compensation may be available for medical treatment, lost wages, or ongoing health monitoring.
