The girl was retrieving her soccer ball around 6:23 p.m. when a black Honda Civic struck her foot. The driver left the area without stopping to offer aid. The full extent of her injuries has not been disclosed.

Howell Township Police are leading the ongoing investigation.

What Should Parents Know About Hit-and-Run Accidents in Howell, NJ?Girl, 11, Struck in Hit-and-Run on S Longview Rd

Parents whose children are hurt in a hit-and-run should know that they have legal options even before a driver is identified.

Children struck by a vehicle, even at low speeds, can suffer fractures, soft tissue injuries, or other harm that may require ongoing medical evaluation. Some injuries in young children aren't immediately apparent and can surface in the days following the incident.

When a driver flees the scene, a family may still be able to recover compensation through their own uninsured motorist coverage if the driver is never identified. A personal injury lawyer can help parents understand how that coverage works and what steps to take while police continue searching for the vehicle.

New Jersey allows two years from the date of an accident to file a personal injury claim on behalf of a minor. When a driver isn't identified, a family pursuing uninsured motorist coverage generally needs physical contact between the fleeing vehicle and the victim, which is documented here since the girl was struck directly.

New Jersey law also typically requires the accident be reported to police within a short window, often within 24 hours, for a hit-and-run claim to qualify under uninsured motorist coverage.

At Metro Law, we understand how frightening it is when a child is hurt and a driver leaves the scene. We have worked with families across New Jersey to explain what legal options exist in situations like this one.

If your family has questions after a hit-and-run, you can reach Metro Law at (800) 469-6476. We're ready to talk through what comes next.
