Branchburg, NJ (October 31, 2024) – A tragic pedestrian crash occurred on Wednesday evening, claiming the life of a Plainfield man who was struck by a van while walking in the RTE 22. The incident took place around 8:30 p.m. near the Red Mill Inn, a location often frequented by residents.
According to authorities, the 48-year-old man, whose name has not been released pending notification of family, was walking in the westbound lanes of the highway when he was hit by a white Ford Econoline van driven by a 68-year-old man from Whitehouse Station. Eyewitnesses reported seeing the pedestrian in the roadway moments before the collision, raising concerns about pedestrian safety in that area.
When Branchburg police arrived at the scene, they found the pedestrian lying face down in the grass median with severe injuries. Officers immediately administered medical aid until the Branchburg Rescue Squad arrived, providing crucial first aid in a desperate attempt to stabilize the victim.
Paramedics from Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, along with the North Branch Fire Company, Readington Police, Bridgewater Police, and the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office, also responded promptly to the scene, coordinating efforts to provide assistance and clear the area for emergency vehicles.
The New Jersey State Police North Star Medevac helicopter was initially requested to airlift the pedestrian to a trauma center, but he was ultimately transported by ground to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Somerset, where he was later pronounced dead.
The driver of the van, along with a 21-year-old passenger from Whitehouse Station, fortunately did not suffer any injuries in the incident. Authorities noted that the pedestrian was wearing dark clothing at the time of the accident, which may have contributed to the visibility challenges for the driver.
Westbound RTE 22 was closed from France Drive to County Line Road, while the eastbound lanes were also closed briefly to facilitate rescue efforts and the ongoing investigation. Traffic was diverted, and motorists were advised to seek alternate routes as authorities worked to clear the scene.
The Branchburg Police Department, in conjunction with the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office Crash Analysis Reconstruction Team, is actively investigating the incident. They urge anyone with additional information to come forward.
Our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of the victim during this incredibly difficult time. The community is left grappling with the impact of this tragic loss, underscoring the need for heightened awareness and safety measures for pedestrians on roadways.
