Bronx, NY – One Killed, Firefighters Injured in Apartment Fire on E 184th St Near Basford Ave

Bronx, NY (March 27, 2026) – One person died and several firefighters were hurt after a fire tore through an apartment building on Thursday, March 26, in the Belmont section of the Bronx. The fire started around 5:30 a.m. on East 184th Street near Basford Avenue.

New York Fire Department and emergency units arrived within minutes and found heavy flames coming from the top floor and roof of the five-story building. Officials said the fire spread quickly through the upper levels, including the space between the ceiling and roof. Crews worked from both inside and outside due to difficult access.

The blaze caused major structural damage to the building. Parts of the roof collapsed onto the top floor, and sections of the exterior wall also gave way. Authorities confirmed that one person died as a result of the fire.

Four firefighters suffered minor injuries, including heat exhaustion, while battling the flames. Paramedics treated them at the scene. Officials have not released the identity of the person who died.
