Cape May County, NJ (October 1, 2025) – A fatal crash occurred Monday evening, September 29, in the Rio Grande section of Middle Township, resulting in the death of 57-year-old Albert MacFarlane.
Police reported that MacFarlane was riding his motorized bike southbound on Route 47 when a Ford Bronco, also traveling south, attempted to turn left onto School Lane and entered MacFarlane’s path. The collision caused MacFarlane to be ejected from his bike. Tragically, after the initial impact, MacFarlane was struck by a Hyundai Veloster, which was also traveling southbound on Route 47.
Despite being rushed to Cooper Cape Regional Medical Center, MacFarlane was later pronounced dead. Both drivers of the Ford Bronco and Hyundai Veloster were unharmed in the crash.
Authorities closed Route 47 south for about three hours while they investigated the scene.
The investigation is still ongoing by the Cape May County Police Department.
We offer our deepest condolences to the McFarlane family during this incredibly difficult time.
Fatal Bike Accidents in New Jersey
When a loved one is tragically lost in a bike accident, the surviving family members are often left with emotional and financial burdens.
In the case of a fatal accident like this recent one, a wrongful death claim can help provide financial compensation to the family for their losses. Common forms of compensation in a wrongful death claim include:
- Funeral and burial expenses: The sudden loss of a loved one can create financial hardship, especially when funeral and burial costs are unexpected. Compensation can cover these expenses, allowing the family to focus on their grief rather than financial strain.
- Medical expenses: Even though MacFarlane was pronounced dead shortly after the crash, there may have been significant medical expenses incurred before his passing, such as emergency medical care or hospital fees. A wrongful death claim can help recover these costs.
- Loss of financial support: If the deceased was the primary wage earner in the family, the surviving family members may be entitled to compensation for the loss of future earnings. This can help provide for the family’s ongoing financial needs.
- Loss of companionship and emotional distress: Family members may be entitled to compensation for the emotional pain and suffering caused by the loss of their loved one. This compensation recognizes the personal and emotional impact that the death has had on the family, including the loss of guidance, companionship, and comfort.
- Punitive damages: In cases where the responsible party’s actions were particularly reckless or egregious, punitive damages may be awarded. These damages serve as a form of punishment for the at-fault party and as a deterrent to prevent similar accidents from occurring in the future.
In the wake of a tragic loss, a wrongful death attorney can help guide the surviving family members through the legal process and ensure that they receive the compensation they deserve.
