How Insurance Claims Work After a Bicycle Crash in Matawan, NJCyclist Critically Hurt in Truck Collision on Rte 34 in Matawan, NJ

When a bicycle is hit by a vehicle in New Jersey, insurance coverage can come from several sources, and to know how they interact matters. New Jersey is a no-fault state, which means a driver’s personal injury protection (PIP) coverage generally pays for their own medical bills first, regardless of fault.

However, bicyclists are not considered motor vehicle operators under PIP rules, so a cyclist may instead pursue a claim through the at-fault driver’s liability insurance. For a minor, a parent or guardian typically initiates that process on the child’s behalf.

Crashes involving trucks and cyclists on roads like these can result in severe injuries, such as broken bones, spinal trauma, and traumatic brain injury are among the most serious outcomes, and some complications may not be fully apparent until days after the collision.

Liability in a truck-versus-bicycle crash can extend beyond the driver alone. These cases strongly depend on the circumstances, the trucking company, a vehicle maintenance contractor, or another party may share responsibility. A personal injury attorney can help identify all potential sources of coverage, gather evidence while it is still available, and handle communications with insurance adjusters.
