Elizabeth, NJ (August 13, 2024) – A tragic accident occurred on Sunday night, August 11, near Newark Liberty International Airport, claiming the life of a 35-year-old bicyclist at a busy intersection in Elizabeth. According to local officials, the incident happened at the intersection of North Street and Spring Street, close to Route 1 & 9, when a vehicle ran a red light, resulting in a fatal collision.

The victim was struck with such force that it split his bicycle in half. A witness, Shonta Smith, described the crash as more intense than a typical car accident, noting that the light had turned red by the time the 20-year-old driver crossed the intersection. The motorist, whose name has not been released, remained at the scene and awaited the arrival of law enforcement.

Locals have expressed concerns about the safety of this intersection, citing it as particularly dangerous for pedestrians and cyclists due to drivers speeding through yellow lights. Local law enforcement officials are currently investigating the incident.

We offer our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased bicyclist.
