Fuel Tanker Fire Kills One, Injures Another on Rte 287 in Edison, NJ

Edison, NJ (May 21, 2026) – A rear-end collision between a Jeep SUV and a fuel tanker on Route 287 in Edison killed one driver and seriously injured a passenger. The crash happened on Monday, May 18, and New Jersey State Police and Fire rushed to the scene.

Officials say that the Volvo tractor was pulling a 8,000 gallon fuel tanker. The tractor was traveling north when the Jeep SUV rear-ended the trailer. The crash caused the fuel and the SUV to become fully engulfed in flames.

The driver of the Jeep died at the scene. The passenger in the vehicle was taken to a nearby hospital with serious injuries. No names or ages were included in the initial report on the crash.

Emergency units worked for hours under difficult conditions to bring the fire under control. Route 287 was shut down in both directions near Exits 1 and 2, and Route 27 between Vineyard Road and Bridge St was also closed, with traffic diverted to Route 1.

Investigators are continuing to piece together the full sequence of events leading up to the wreck.

We extend our deepest condolences to the family of the person who lost their life, and wish the injured passenger a full recovery.

Legal Options After a Fatal Crash in Edison, NJFuel Tanker Fire Kills One, Injures Another on Rte 287 in Edison, NJ

When a crash results in a death and serious injury, the surviving family members and hurt passengers may have legal options worth exploring. In New Jersey, the family of someone killed in a road collision may be able to file a wrongful death claim. A person seriously hurt in the same accident can also be eligible to seek compensation for medical expenses, lost income, and other damages.

The compensation that victims can recover depends heavily on the specific facts of the case, including vehicle type, road conditions, and the actions of each driver involved.

Injuries from crashes that involve fuel tankers or other large commercial vehicles tend to be severe. People in smaller passenger vehicles may face burns, traumatic brain injuries, spinal damage, or internal trauma. Some of these conditions require long-term medical care, and the full extent of the harm may not be known for days or weeks after the accident.

A car accident attorney can help identify who may be held responsible. Legal guidance can help clarify what documentation may be needed and what steps may be available going forward.
