Kearny, NJ – Fatal Crash on Newark-Jersey City Tpke

Kearny, NJ (May 19, 2025) – A fatal early-morning crash brought traffic to a standstill Friday on one of Kearny’s busiest routes as investigators worked to determine what led to the deadly incident.

On May 16, around 4 a.m., officers with the Kearny Police Department and the Hudson County Regional Collision Investigation Unit were dispatched to the scene of a deadly crash along the Newark-Jersey City Turnpike, also known as County Road 508. The roadway, heavily traveled by morning commuters heading to the New Jersey Turnpike and I-280, was quickly shut down in both directions.

The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office confirmed the crash in a social media post and urged drivers to avoid the area through the morning commute. Details about the number of people killed or hurt in the wreck have not been released. It’s also unclear how many vehicles were involved or what may have caused the crash. Emergency personnel worked on scene for several hours Friday morning while investigators began piecing together what happened. As of now, the crash remains under investigation.

Our deepest condolences go out to those impacted by this heartbreaking event.

Car Accidents in New Jersey

Kearny, NJ – Fatal Crash on Newark-Jersey City TurnpikeNew Jersey’s roadways see thousands of collisions each year, many of which lead to serious injuries or death. In 2023 alone, over 250,000 traffic crashes were reported statewide, with fatalities rising in both urban and suburban areas. Roadways like the Newark-Jersey City Turnpike are especially prone to early-morning and late-night crashes due to high traffic volumes and poor visibility.

While every crash is different, it’s helpful to understand some common causes of serious wrecks. Here are a few that often play a major role:

  • Drowsy Driving: Crashes occurring between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m. are often linked to driver fatigue. Motorists pushing through long hours or overnight shifts can lose focus or fall asleep behind the wheel, leading to high-impact collisions.
  • Speeding: Even slight increases in speed significantly raise the risk of fatal injury during a crash. Speeding also reduces the amount of time a driver has to react to changing road conditions or unexpected obstacles.
  • Poor Visibility: Low light, fog, or heavy rain can reduce a driver’s ability to spot other vehicles or road signs. This is especially dangerous on high-speed or poorly lit routes.
  • Distracted Driving: Cell phone use, GPS devices, and in-car distractions often lead to drivers missing critical cues. Just a few seconds of distraction can result in life-altering crashes.
  • Impaired Driving: Whether due to alcohol, drugs, or even prescription medication, impairment remains a top factor in fatal crashes across New Jersey.
