Massapequa, NY (January 2, 2026) – Two drivers suffered critical injuries following a serious crash on Thursday morning, January 1, on Sunrise Highway in Nassau County.
The collision occurred around 2:00 a.m. when a westbound vehicle entered the eastbound lanes of Sunrise Highway. Nassau County Police reported that a 2021 Mercedes collided with an Acura that was traveling eastbound. Both drivers were alone in their vehicles when the impact occurred. Emergency crews arrived at the scene and provided immediate medical assistance.
Police identified the driver of the Mercedes as a thirty-two-year-old man from Ronkonkoma. The other driver, a thirty-year-old man, was operating the Acura. Both drivers sustained severe injuries during the collision.
Paramedics transported both men to area hospitals for treatment. Authorities later confirmed that each driver remained in critical condition following admission. Officials have not released updates regarding their current medical status.
Police arrested the Mercedes driver and charged him with assault, vehicular assault, driving while intoxicated, and reckless driving.
Due to the seriousness of his injuries, authorities delayed arraignment until it became medically appropriate. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash remains ongoing.
Our thoughts are with the two injured people, and we hope they each receive the care needed for recovery.
Drunk Driving Accidents in New York
Drunk driving accidents remain one of the most dangerous causes of serious injury crashes across New York. These incidents often occur during late-night and early-morning hours, when impaired drivers may make reckless decisions. Driving the wrong way on a highway creates extreme danger and leaves little time for others to react.
Crashes caused by impaired driving frequently result in severe or life-altering injuries. Victims involved in drunk driving accidents may face a wide range of physical and emotional challenges, including:
- Traumatic brain injuries that affect memory, speech, or long-term cognitive function
- Spinal cord injuries that may lead to chronic pain or permanent mobility loss
- Internal organ damage requiring surgery or extended hospitalization
- Broken bones and orthopedic injuries that limit movement and daily activities
- Severe cuts, burns, or facial injuries that may cause lasting scarring
- Emotional trauma, anxiety, or post-accident stress that interferes with daily life
These injuries often bring significant financial strain. Medical bills, rehabilitation costs, and time away from work can overwhelm victims and their families. In many cases, recovery takes months or even years.
Victims injured by impaired drivers may have the right to pursue compensation for medical expenses, lost income, and pain caused by the crash. A drunk driving accident lawyer can help hold responsible parties accountable while also helping families regain a sense of stability after a traumatic crash.
