When to Notify Insurance After a New Jersey Crash
In New Jersey, you should notify your insurance company as soon as possible after a crash, ideally within 24 hours. Most policies include a prompt reporting requirement, and waiting too long can complicate your claim.
New Jersey operates under a no-fault insurance system. This means that regardless of who caused the crash, each person’s own Personal Injury Protection (PIP) coverage pays for initial medical expenses. For passengers in transport vans PIP coverage may apply through the vehicle operator’s commercial policy. Knowing which policy covers you is an important first step.
When you contact your insurer, stick to the basic facts. Describe what happened, where, and when. Avoid giving recorded statements or accepting early settlement offers before speaking with an attorney. Insurance adjusters work for the insurance company, not for you. A car accident lawyer can review any documents you receive and explain what your policy actually covers, including medical bills, lost wages, and other costs that may apply to your situation.
Documentation matters throughout this process. Save all medical records, bills, and correspondence with insurers. If you were a passenger in a commercial transport vehicle, there may be additional coverage layers worth exploring. Many people are unsure how to handle these steps after a crash, and legal guidance can help clarify what options are available.
