West Haverstraw, NY (July 2, 2026) – Several people were hurt shortly after midnight on Thursday, July 2, when an emergency rescue truck struck a home after a collision with a Jeep on Railroad Avenue and Route 9W in West Haverstraw.
The rescue truck, operated by the Thiells Fire Department, was heading east on Railroad Avenue and crossing Route 9W when it collided with a Jeep traveling north on the highway. A 17-year-old was driving the Jeep.
The impact sent the rescue truck down a hill and into a single-family home, where a family with young children was at home at the time. One adult from the home was taken to the hospital, along with four to five first responders who had been riding in the truck and the teen who drove the Jeep.
All of those hurt are expected to recover, and some have already been released from the hospital. The teen driver was issued a ticket for operating a vehicle after dark on a junior license.
The road was temporarily closed but has since reopened, as the wreck remains under review.
