Rockaway, NJ – Six-Vehicle Wreck on I-80 Ends in Injuries
Rockaway, NJ (March 31, 2025) – A chain-reaction collision disrupted the morning commute in Rockaway, New Jersey, on March 29, when a tractor-trailer rear-ended a dump truck on Interstate 80 westbound near milepost 35.2, triggering a crash that involved a total of six vehicles.
The New Jersey State Police confirmed that the crash occurred shortly after 7:30 a.m., just west of exit 35 – Mount Hope Ave. According to investigators, traffic had slowed when a tractor-trailer collided with the back of a dump truck. The impact caused the dump truck to strike vehicles ahead, leading to a multi-vehicle pileup. The force of the crash ejected two men from the dump truck, both of whom sustained serious injuries. Emergency crews responded swiftly and transported the injured to nearby hospitals for medical treatment.
The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) initially reported the accident at 8:06 a.m., noting that all westbound lanes were closed. Motorists experienced significant delays as the roadway remained shut for about four hours. NJDOT announced that all lanes had reopened by early afternoon.
Authorities continue to investigate the events leading up to the collision. No other injuries have been reported at this time, and no charges have been filed as of Friday evening.
We hope those injured in this accident recover quickly.
Truck Accidents in New Jersey
Truck accidents in New Jersey often lead to severe injuries or worse due to the sheer size and weight of commercial vehicles. In 2022, the New Jersey Department of Transportation reported more than 3,600 crashes involving large trucks. Many of these incidents occurred on busy highways such as I-80, the New Jersey Turnpike, and I-287. These collisions often disrupt traffic for hours and can result in life-altering consequences for those involved.
Understanding what follows a major highway crash like this one can help prepare victims for what’s ahead. Below are several types of injuries commonly associated with truck accidents:
- Spinal Cord Injuries: Collisions involving large vehicles can cause trauma to the spinal column, leading to temporary or permanent paralysis. Even minor spinal injuries may require surgery and months of rehabilitation, significantly impacting a person’s mobility and livelihood.
- Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI): Victims of truck crashes may suffer head trauma, even with seat belts and airbags. TBIs can range from concussions to life-threatening brain damage, often leading to long-term cognitive and emotional changes.
- Internal Injuries: The blunt force of a crash can damage internal organs without visible external wounds. Internal bleeding, ruptured organs, and other unseen injuries can be fatal without timely medical care.
- Crush Injuries and Amputations: Vehicles pinned or crushed by trucks can trap occupants, leading to limb amputations or severe musculoskeletal damage. These injuries often require surgical intervention and long-term recovery plans.
- Psychological Trauma: Beyond physical wounds, truck crashes leave many survivors with lasting emotional scars. Anxiety, PTSD, and depression are common, especially in those who witnessed traumatic injuries or fatalities.
