South Plainfield, NJ – One Killed, Two Injured in House Fire on Cedarbrook Ave

South Plainfield, NJ (February 4, 2026) – A deadly house fire in South Plainfield left one person dead and two others injured early Wednesday morning, February 4. Flames erupted on Cedarbrook Avenue just before 5:15 a.m., sending thick smoke through the home. Fire officials said the blaze appeared to be gas-fed, which may have caused it to spread quickly.

The Plainfield Fire Department rushed to the scene and worked aggressively to reach the residents inside. Crews pulled one person out of the burning house as flames moved through the structure. Another resident escaped by jumping from a second-floor window to avoid the smoke and fire. Both individuals suffered injuries and are now receiving medical treatment.

Emergency units continued searching the home as firefighters fought to bring the fire under control. Inside, responders found a third resident who did not survive. Authorities pronounced the victim dead at the scene. Officials have not yet released the identity of the deceased or details about the extent of the injuries suffered by the survivors.

Firefighters faced difficult winter conditions while working the scene. Crews stretched hoses over snow-covered ground and dug out a hydrant across the street to maintain water access. Despite the challenges, responders continued working until they contained the flames.

Investigators have not confirmed what sparked the fire. Authorities continue to investigate the cause.

We extend our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased victim and hope for a full recovery for those injured.

Who Is Legally Considered The “Next Of Kin” For A Wrongful Death Claim In New Jersey? One Killed, Two Injured in House Fire on Cedarbrook Ave

In New Jersey, the “next of kin” for a wrongful death claim usually includes close family members such as a surviving spouse, children, or parents. State law generally allows these relatives to seek damages when a loved one dies due to another party’s negligence. The specific person eligible to file depends on the victim’s family relationships and legal status.

Wrongful death claims often focus on the losses that surviving family members experience after a fatal incident. These damages may include funeral costs, medical bills tied to the final injury, and loss of financial support. In many cases, the court follows an order of priority, meaning a spouse and children typically receive the first right to recover compensation.

If the deceased person did not have a spouse or children, parents or other dependent relatives may qualify as next of kin. Each case depends on family structure, financial reliance, and other legal factors. Keeping documentation organized can help clarify who may have the right to bring a claim and what damages may apply.

A wrongful death lawyer can help explain how New Jersey wrongful death laws define next of kin. An attorney may review family relationships, paperwork, and the circumstances of the fire accident to explain what options may exist. Legal guidance can also help families understand what types of compensation may be available under state law.
