Teaneck, NJ – Wrong-Way Crash on Rte 4 & River Rd, Injuries
Teaneck, NJ (September 16, 2024) – A horrific wrong-way collision occurred on Sunday, September 15, on Route 4 in Teaneck, leaving multiple individuals seriously injured. The crash, which took place near River Road at around 11 p.m. on September 15, involved a BMW sedan traveling the wrong way in the westbound lanes and a 2020 Jeep Compass. Authorities report that two of the five occupants in the Jeep were seriously injured and remain hospitalized, while the other three suffered less severe injuries.
The driver of the BMW, identified as 24-year-old Emelio S. Lutchmansingh of Queens, tried to flee the scene on foot but was quickly apprehended by Teaneck police and Bergen County sheriff’s officers. Lutchmansingh was taken into custody and remains hospitalized under police supervision. The Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office confirmed this morning that the driver faces numerous charges, including assault by auto, leaving the scene of an accident resulting in serious bodily injury, resisting arrest, and drug possession.
According to Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella, the 2004 BMW M3 driven by Lutchmansingh had stolen license plates, and during the investigation, authorities found cocaine inside the vehicle. The Bergen County Sheriff’s Bureau of Criminal Investigation Crime Scene Unit collected evidence at the crash site, as Musella’s Fatal Accident Investigation Unit and Teaneck police conducted a joint investigation into the incident.
The wrong-way collision occurred when the BMW, traveling east in the westbound lanes, collided head-on with the Jeep Compass. The impact of the crash resulted in the two seriously injured passengers in the Jeep being extricated by emergency responders and transported to Hackensack University Medical Center. Responders confirmed that the other occupants of the Jeep sustained less serious injuries and received medical attention as well.
The crash caused significant traffic disruptions along Route 4 as emergency services worked to clear the scene and assist those involved. Lutchmansingh, who attempted to flee the scene on foot after the crash, was quickly captured by law enforcement.
We hope all the wounded victims recover swiftly.
