Pedestrian Accidents in New Jersey

Toms River, NJ – Two Pedestrians Killed in Crash on Fischer BlvdPedestrian fatalities remain a serious issue in New Jersey, with hundreds of people losing their lives in traffic-related incidents each year. In recent years, the state has reported an increasing number of pedestrian-involved crashes, particularly in areas with high traffic volumes. Many of these incidents occur at night when visibility is lower, and drivers may not see pedestrians crossing the road.

Understanding the risks of pedestrian accidents can help improve safety. Here are some factors that contribute to these tragedies:

  • Lack of Crosswalks – When designated crosswalks are unavailable or inconveniently placed, pedestrians may attempt to cross at unmarked locations, increasing their risk of being hit by a vehicle.
  • Poor Lighting Conditions – Many fatal pedestrian accidents happen at night in poorly lit areas, making it difficult for drivers to see people crossing the road in time to stop.
  • Driver Distraction – Distracted driving, such as texting or using a GPS, reduces a driver’s awareness and reaction time, putting pedestrians at greater risk.
  • Speeding Vehicles – Cars traveling at high speeds require more distance to stop, making it harder to avoid a pedestrian who unexpectedly enters the roadway.
