Bicycle Accidents in Jersey City

Female Bicyclist Injured in Crash at 18th St & Jersey Ave

Bicycle accidents in Jersey City are a growing concern, especially as more people rely on cycling for transportation, exercise, and commuting.

Busy city streets, traffic congestion, and distracted driving create dangerous conditions for cyclists who share the road with larger vehicles.

There are several reasons why bicycle accidents happen in urban areas like Jersey City:

  • Driver inattention – Many crashes occur when drivers fail to notice cyclists, often because they are focused on cell phones or navigation systems. A split-second distraction can cause devastating injuries.
  • Failure to yield – Drivers who fail to yield the right of way at intersections put cyclists at risk. This often happens when vehicles turn without checking bike lanes.
  • Opening car doors into traffic – Also called “dooring,” this occurs when drivers or passengers open their car doors into the path of a bicyclist. Cyclists often have no time to react.
  • Speeding in urban areas – High speeds increase both the chance of collisions and the severity of injuries when they occur. Even a low-speed crash can throw a bicyclist from their bike.
  • Unsafe road conditions – Potholes, uneven pavement, and poorly marked bike lanes can cause cyclists to lose control and crash.
  • Impaired driving – Alcohol or drug use reduces reaction time and judgment, increasing the likelihood of collisions with vulnerable road users like cyclists.

Bicyclists face a higher risk of serious injury compared to occupants of motor vehicles. Without the protection of a car, cyclists are exposed to fractures, head trauma, and other severe injuries. For this reason, New Jersey law allows injured cyclists to pursue compensation when another party’s negligence caused the crash.

Working with a skilled personal injury attorney can help victims protect their rights. An attorney can investigate the accident, collect evidence, and negotiate with insurance companies to ensure fair compensation.
