Bicyclist Accidents in New Jersey

Bicyclist Struck by Vehicle on Randall Ave & Smith St

Bicyclist accidents, especially in busy urban areas like Trenton, can often result in serious injuries. Bicyclists are more vulnerable on the road due to the lack of protection compared to other vehicles.

While each accident is unique, several common factors often contribute to these types of collisions.

  • Distracted Driving: One of the most common causes of bicycle accidents is distracted driving. Whether it’s texting, adjusting the radio, or simply not paying attention to the road, distracted drivers may not see cyclists in time to avoid a collision.
  • Failure to Yield: Many accidents occur when drivers fail to yield the right of way to cyclists at intersections or when making turns. Bicyclists often have to navigate around vehicles that don’t give them the space they need, leading to accidents.
  • Speeding: Excessive speed, particularly in residential or urban areas, can lead to a lack of time for drivers to react to a cyclist. Speeding can make it more difficult to stop in time if a cyclist is on the road.
  • Impaired Driving: Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs can significantly impair a driver’s ability to recognize and react to hazards, including cyclists on the road. Impaired driving is a leading cause of many types of accidents.
  • Poor Road Conditions: Potholes, debris, and poorly marked bike lanes can create dangerous conditions for cyclists. In some cases, road hazards that are difficult to see or navigate can cause a cyclist to lose control, leading to a collision with a vehicle.
  • Inadequate Bicycle Infrastructure: In cities where bike lanes are poorly designed or absent, cyclists are forced to share the road with vehicles, increasing the likelihood of accidents. Proper infrastructure can help protect cyclists and reduce the risk of crashes.
