What Should Families Know After a Fatal Hit-and-Run in Brick Township, NJ?
When a driver flees the scene of a fatal crash, the surviving family may have legal options even when the driver has not yet been fully prosecuted. In New Jersey, a hit-and-run that results in a fatality is a serious criminal offense, and a separate civil claim can be filed independently of any criminal proceedings. Families in Ocean County dealing with this type of loss are not required to wait for a criminal case to conclude before consulting an attorney.
Fatal bicycle collisions are a persistent concern across Ocean County and its surrounding townships. Routes like Hooper Avenue, Route 70, and Route 9 through Brick Township see heavy vehicle traffic at commute hours, creating dangerous conditions for cyclists and pedestrians using crosswalks and bike lanes. After these kinds of crashes, particular questions about speed, visibility, and right-of-way can arise.
Families who lose a loved one in a collision that involves a fleeing driver tend to face not only grief but also significant financial hardship, including funeral costs and the loss of a family member’s future contributions. A wrongful death attorney with experience in fatal cases can assess whether an uninsured motorist claim, a third-party claim, or another avenue may apply to the specific circumstances.
