Hempstead, NY (March 16, 2026) – Two elderly people lost their lives and several others suffered injuries after a large multi-vehicle accident on the Southern State Parkway in Hempstead on Sunday, March 15.
The crash happened at about 10:00 p.m. on the Southern State Parkway near Exit 17S. New York State Police said the accident involved six vehicles and a total of ten people across both the westbound and eastbound lanes of the highway.
Investigators reported that a 2020 Cadillac Escalade was traveling westbound when the driver sideswiped a gray BMW in the left lane. The impact caused the Escalade to lose control and cross the center median into the eastbound lanes.
Police said the Escalade then struck several oncoming vehicles. One of the collisions was a head-on crash with a 2016 Toyota Highlander traveling eastbound.
Emergency units arrived at the scene and found multiple damaged vehicles across the roadway. Responders worked quickly to assess the injured and arrange medical transport for several drivers and passengers involved in the crash.
Authorities confirmed that Donald Maxwell, 82, and Liscent B. Maxwell, 88, who were traveling in the Toyota Highlander, died at the scene due to their injuries. Several other people from the remaining vehicles were taken to local hospitals for treatment. Officials said at least one injured person was listed in critical condition.
The accident caused major disruption along the parkway overnight while crews cleared the damaged vehicles and documented the scene. Authorities worked for several hours before reopening the affected lanes early Monday morning.
