After a car accident, collecting the right evidence early can make a significant difference in a personal injury claim. Photos of vehicle damage, the road, and any visible injuries help establish what happened before conditions change or vehicles are repaired. Contact information from witnesses is also valuable, since their accounts can support your version of events if the other driver disputes fault later.
Medical records are just as important as physical evidence. Seeking treatment promptly and keeping copies of diagnoses, treatment plans, and bills creates a clear link between the accident and any injuries, which matters under New Jersey's insurance and injury threshold rules. Without this documentation, insurance companies may argue that an injury was unrelated or less serious than claimed.
A copy of the police report can also help establish key details like time, location, and initial statements from those involved. Insurance information from all drivers involved should be collected as well, since more than one policy may end up being relevant to a claim.
Because evidence can be lost or become harder to obtain over time, a car accident lawyer can help preserve it early, requesting things like traffic camera footage, vehicle data, or additional witness statements before they become unavailable. This kind of early groundwork can strengthen a claim significantly down the road.
