Bicycle Accidents in New Jersey
Bicyclists in New Jersey face higher risks than drivers because they do not have seat belts, airbags, or a steel frame around them. When a car hits a bike, the rider often takes the full force of the impact. Even at lower speeds, the body can strike the vehicle, the pavement, or nearby objects. These crashes can lead to a wide range of injuries, some of which may not show up right away.
Common injuries in bicycle accidents include:
- Head and brain injuries. A rider can suffer a concussion or traumatic brain injury from hitting a hood or the ground. Even with a helmet, the brain can still jolt inside the skull.
- Broken bones. Arms, wrists, collarbones, ribs, hips, and legs often fracture when a cyclist braces for impact or lands hard.
- Neck and back injuries. A sudden hit can twist the spine and cause whiplash, herniated discs, or lasting nerve pain.
- Road rash and deep cuts. Sliding across pavement can remove skin, cause infection, and leave scars that need ongoing care.
- Internal injuries. Blunt force can damage organs or cause internal bleeding, which may become dangerous without quick treatment.
- Knee and joint damage. Riders may tear ligaments or damage cartilage when the bike folds or the body hits at an angle.
Some victims feel shaken but think they are fine at first. Hours later, they notice headaches, dizziness, or sharp pain. That delay can happen with concussions, spinal trauma, or internal bleeding. Because of this, doctors often recommend a full checkup after any bike crash. Early treatment helps prevent small injuries from turning into bigger problems.
Recovery can take time. A broken wrist may limit work and daily tasks. A head injury can affect memory and focus. Road rash can require wound care and even skin grafts in severe cases. Many riders also feel emotional distress after a crash, especially if they now fear riding again near busy roads.
Victims of bicycle accidents in New Jersey deserve clear answers about what happened. A personal injury lawyer can step in to investigate the scene and gather evidence before it disappears. That support matters in cases where drivers deny fault or try to shift blame onto the cyclist.
