Jersey City, NJ (November 24, 2025) – A late-night house fire in Jersey City left one man with serious injuries on Monday, November 24. The Jersey City Fire Department responded around 1 a.m. to a residential building at 241 Baldwin Avenue after reports of smoke and flames. Firefighters entered the home and found heavy fire activity in the basement.
Crews worked to control the flames and clear the smoke. While searching the basement, firefighters discovered an unconscious adult man with serious bodily injuries.
Emergency medical personnel rushed him to a nearby hospital. Doctors listed him in critical but stable condition as of the latest update.

We hope the injured man receives strong medical care and makes steady progress in recovery.
Residential Fires in New Jersey
Basement fires can spread fast and trap occupants before they realize what is happening. In dense Jersey City neighborhoods, homes often sit close together, and many buildings include older wiring, crowded storage areas, or aging heating systems. Those conditions can raise fire risks if something fails or sparks. Even when firefighters arrive quickly, smoke and heat can cause life-threatening injuries within minutes.
Several factors may lead to serious residential fires like this one:
- Electrical problems. Faulty wiring, overloaded outlets, or old breaker panels can spark flames
- Heating equipment issues. Space heaters, boilers, or furnaces may overheat or malfunction.
- Appliance failures. Washers, dryers, or other basement appliances can short out and ignite nearby items.
- Improper storage. Paint, gasoline, or other flammable materials stored in basements can fuel a fast blaze.
- Candles or smoking materials. A small ember can ignite clutter, furniture, or exposed insulation.
- Poor ventilation. Basements trap heat and smoke, which makes fires grow and injuries worse.
- Lack of working smoke alarms. If alarms fail or are not placed near sleeping areas, people may not wake in time.
- Maintenance neglect. Landlords or homeowners who delay repairs on wiring or heating systems increase risk.
When a fire causes severe harm, the injured person may have legal options. If negligence played a role—such as unsafe wiring, a defective appliance, or a landlord’s failure to maintain the property—a claim can help cover the losses tied to medical care and recovery. A personal injury attorney can investigate the cause, preserve evidence, and work with experts to show how the fire started and who may be responsible.
