New York Structure Fires
Fire departments across the country are dispatched to hundreds of thousands of structure fires each year. About 350,000 structure fires happen yearly in the United States. Despite the location of a fire, it may be extremely dangerous for anyone who becomes involved. Those who are hurt in fires usually undergo various degrees of smoke inhalation and burns. On average, approximately 2,600 people are killed per year in structure fires in the United States.
Residential fire prevention has become a serious problem in the US, with around 80% of fire-related fatalities occurring in houses, apartment buildings, and hotels. The main reason fatal residential fires occur is tobacco products that are mishandled, specifically improper disposal. Cooking appliances, such as stoves, grills, and hot plates are a main concern in severe burns in residential fires.
New York structure fires usually happen due to:
- Outdated electrical work
- Appliances that are defective
- Cracked gas lines
- Improperly installed gas lines
- Faulty boilers/furnaces
After a residential fire, it is vital to figure out if the action or inaction of a third party contributed to the fire, or blocked building residents from safely leaving the premises.
Some elements often investigated by a Manhattan burn injury lawyer include:
- If fire and safety protocols are up-to-date
- Vents/fireplaces were safely maintained
- Proper fire safety supplies/tools
- Working fire doors
- Easily accessible fire escapes/exits
- Correctly manufactured/positioned firewalls
- Properly functioning smoke detectors
If it is proven that the action/inaction of a third party caused building occupants to be unable to safely exit the premises, or directly contributed to causing the fire, you may have a substantial claim against the negligent actions of another person/party.
