Rockville Centre, NY (July 10, 2026) – A 24-year-old man remains in critical condition after he was hit by a car while he crossed Lakeview Avenue on Wednesday morning, July 8.
The Nassau County Police said the man was walking south on North Village Avenue at about 9:42 a.m. when he crossed Lakeview Avenue and was struck by a 2024 gray Toyota RAV4. The SUV was traveling west on Lakeview Avenue, driven by an 84-year-old woman.
He was taken to a nearby hospital, where he remains in critical condition. The driver stayed at the scene and has been cooperating with police.
Nassau County police have not released further details about the man's identity. The investigation into how the crash unfolded is still underway.
We're keeping the injured man in our thoughts as he recovers.

New York law generally requires drivers to yield to pedestrians who are crossing within a marked or unmarked crosswalk at an intersection, which is common at busy junctions throughout Rockville Centre.
Nassau County sees a steady number of pedestrian crashes each year at intersections where wide, multi-lane roads meet local streets, since drivers that turn or proceed through can have limited time to spot someone on foot.
A pedestrian struck by a vehicle at this kind of speed can face a long road to recovery, including surgeries, rehabilitation, and time away from work while healing. Critical injuries tend to bring mounting medical bills long before it's clear how full a recovery will be.
New York follows a pure comparative negligence standard, which means an injured pedestrian can still recover damages even if they were partly at fault, though any compensation would be reduced by their share of responsibility.
Since New York is a no-fault insurance state, a New York pedestrian accident lawyer can help determine whether a victim's injuries meet the serious injury threshold required under state law to pursue a claim beyond no-fault benefits and can assist in gathering police reports and witness accounts while details are still fresh.
