Motorcyclist Killed in Collision on Rte 13 in Vienna, NY

July 23, 2026

Vienna, NY (July 23, 2026) – On Wednesday, July 22, a motorcyclist died after his motorcycle and a pickup truck crashed on State Route 13 in the town of Vienna.

New York State Police said the wreck happened around 5:05 p.m., when Ryan A. Lyke, 37, of Canastota, was riding a 2022 Harley-Davidson motorcycle north on Route 13. A southbound 2020 Nissan Frontier, driven by Leo G. Seaton, 90, of Camden, turned left directly into the motorcycle's path, and the two vehicles struck each other.

Lyke was taken to Rome Health, where he was pronounced dead. Investigators say Seaton, the driver of the pickup truck, was evaluated for impairment, and none was found.

The investigation into this wreck remains ongoing.

Our condolences go out to Lyke's family during this difficult time.

Legal Questions That Arise After Fatal Left-Turn Accidents in Vienna, NY

Left-turn crashes involving motorcycles are a recurring concern on rural stretches of Vienna, NY, highways where a rider may be hard to spot for oncoming drivers to judge in time.

In Oneida County, Route 13 links to NY-46 and provides access to the NY State Thruway, corridors that carry heavy vehicle and motorcycle traffic through the warmer months.

Under New York's pure comparative negligence rule, a driver who turns left into oncoming traffic can be found primarily responsible for a crash, though fault is still divided based on the specific facts.

New York also excludes motorcycles from its no-fault insurance system, which means claims like this one typically proceed through the traditional fault-based legal process rather than no-fault coverage.

Families who lose a loved one in a left-turn crash commonly face sudden funeral and burial costs, unpaid medical bills, and the loss of that person's income and companionship. These losses can surface all at once, even as the family is still processing what happened.

New York law allows a personal representative of the deceased's estate to bring a wrongful death claim under the state's Estates, Powers, and Trusts Law.

A wrongful death lawyer can help identify who qualifies to file, gather evidence such as vehicle data and eyewitness accounts, and explain what categories of compensation, such as funeral expenses or lost financial support, a family may be able to pursue.
