New Brunswick, NJ (May 26, 2025) – A tragic hit-and-run in Middlesex County claimed the life of a local woman on the night of Saturday, May 24. The crash, which happened around 10:41 p.m., drew a swift response from police in New Brunswick, who were called to the intersection of Lee Street and Suydam Street after reports of a pedestrian being struck by a vehicle.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found 48-year-old Elvia Gavarrete of New Brunswick suffering from severe injuries. Despite lifesaving efforts, she was pronounced deceased at the scene. Pedestrian Accidents in New Jersey

New Brunswick, NJ - Woman Killed in Lee St Hit-and-Run, Driver ChargedNew Jersey has seen an alarming number of pedestrian-related fatalities in recent years. In 2023, over 175 pedestrians lost their lives on the state’s roadways. Contributing factors often include speeding, distracted driving, failure to yield, and poorly lit intersections. The state has worked to improve pedestrian safety, but deadly incidents continue to occur far too often. Learn more about traffic safety programs and initiatives in New Jersey.

To understand the dangers pedestrians face, here’s a deeper look at pedestrian accident risks:

  • Increased Danger at Intersections: Many fatal pedestrian accidents occur at intersections due to miscommunication between drivers and pedestrians, speeding, or failure to yield the right of way. Poor visibility, especially at night, adds to the risk.
  • Hit-and-Run Incidents Are Rising: In recent years, hit-and-run crashes have surged, leaving victims and their families without closure. These incidents often delay emergency medical response, making outcomes even more tragic.
  • Nighttime Conditions Increase Risk: Over 75% of pedestrian deaths occur at night. Reduced visibility, glare from headlights, and dark clothing all make it harder for drivers to see pedestrians, especially in unmarked crosswalks or areas without proper lighting.
  • Distraction and Impairment: Both drivers and pedestrians contribute to accidents when they are distracted or impaired. A momentary lapse in attention can have fatal consequences. Smartphones, alcohol, or drugs often play a role in serious accidents.
