What Should Families Do After a Fatal Pedestrian Accident in Paterson, NJ?
When a pedestrian is fatally hurt, the family is often left with urgent questions about what comes next. In New Jersey, the family of someone killed due to another party’s negligence may have the right to file a wrongful death claim. This type of legal action can address funeral costs, lost financial support, and other damages tied to the loss.
Paterson is one of the most densely populated cities in New Jersey, and its street grid sees heavy vehicle and foot traffic throughout the day and into the night. Intersections along Madison Avenue, Market Street, and Main Street are among the busiest in Passaic County. Pedestrian fatalities at urban crossings usually raise questions about vehicle speed, traffic signal compliance, and whether the driver had adequate time to stop.
In the case that an accident is fatal, a wrongful death lawyer can help surviving family members understand what evidence may be relevant, what deadlines apply under New Jersey law, and what types of compensation may be available. New Jersey’s wrongful death statute has specific filing requirements, and to act early helps preserve key documentation.
