July 20, 2026

Bayville, NJ (July 20, 2026) – Two young boys died on Sunday, July 19, after a boating tragedy on Barnegat Bay near Bayville, New Jersey.

The New Jersey State Police and emergency units were called to the water near MJ's Restaurant Bar & Grill on Bay Boulevard after reports that CPR was already underway aboard a boat. Responders reached the vessel and continued efforts to help the boys, but both were pronounced dead.

The boys' identities and ages have not been released. It also remains unclear whether anyone else aboard the boat was hurt.

Investigators are continuing to piece together what led to the accident.

Our thoughts are with the boys' family during an unimaginably difficult time.

Can a Family File a Wrongful Death Claim After a Boating Accident in Bayville, NJ?

Two Boys Killed in Boating Accident on the Barnegat Bay

Yes, New Jersey law allows a family to pursue a wrongful death claim when a boating tragedy takes the life of a loved one, provided the claim is filed by the estate's representative within the state's required time frame.

Barnegat Bay is a heavily used waterway for boaters traveling between Bayville, Seaside Heights, and Toms River, and the surrounding shoreline sees significant boat traffic during the summer months, particularly on weekends.

When children lose their lives in a boating tragedy, families are commonly left grappling with funeral costs, the loss of companionship, and profound emotional grief that can last for years. In cases where young children are involved, questions may also arise about supervision, boat operation, or whether safety equipment functioned as intended.

A wrongful death lawyer can help a grieving family understand which parties may share responsibility, whether that includes a boat operator, an equipment manufacturer, or another party connected to the vessel. Legal guidance can also help clarify what types of compensation may be available to help with funeral expenses and other losses tied to a loved one's death.
