Does New Jersey Require Drivers to Report a Minor Crash in Hampton, NJ?

Two Vehicles Involved in Minor Injury Crash on Rte 31

Yes, New Jersey law requires drivers to report a crash to police if it results in injury, death, or significant property damage, even when the injuries appear minor.

Injuries from a two-vehicle wreck aren't always obvious right away. Soft tissue damage, whiplash, and concussions can take hours or days to fully present, so a medical evaluation soon after a crash is worth considering even when injuries seem mild at first.

A common mistake that victims tend to make is to put off medical evaluations after a crash. Putting off a medical evaluation can end up working against someone later on. Insurance adjusters frequently point to a gap between the date of the crash and the date of the first doctor visit as a reason to question whether the injuries were really connected to the crash at all. A delay of even a few days can be used to argue that something else caused the pain, which can make it harder to recover the full value of a claim.

A car accident lawyer can review police reports, witness accounts, and insurance correspondence to help victims understand their options. New Jersey follows a modified comparative negligence rule, and it means that it bars recovery if a person is found 51 percent or more at fault.
