Woodbury, NY – Joseph DeVito Killed in Pedestrian Crash on Jericho Turnpike at On Parade Diner

Woodbury, NY (January 20, 2023) – A man identified as Joseph DeVito was exiting a diner in Woodbury, Long Island, and was fatally struck by a vehicle. The fatal crash happened Wednesday, January 18. He was hit by an intoxicated driver, according to reports from police. 

Information provided by the Nassau County Police Department Homicide Squad shows the crash occurred at around 2:30 p.m. Authorities went to the crash scene, located in the parking lot of On Parade Diner on Jericho Turnpike. 

Willem Specht, 62, allegedly backed up and struck 61-year-old Joseph DeVito who had just exited the restaurant. DeVito suffered traumatic injuries and was transported by Nassau County Ambulance to an area hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased at around 3:45 p.m. 

Specht stayed at the scene and was arrested by police. He was charged with intoxicated driving, 2nd-degree reckless endangerment, 2nd-degree assault, vehicular manslaughter in the 2nd degree, and manslaughter in the 2nd degree. 

Specht reportedly had a blood alcohol content of about three times the legal limit, though he told police his vehicle rapidly accelerated by itself. Authorities in Woodbury continue to investigate the details of the crash.
