How Are Medical Bills Covered After a Crash in Bridgewater Twp., NJ?

Person Trapped, Unconscious in Crash on I-287

Medical bills after a serious crash are typically covered first through Personal Injury Protection (PIP), which New Jersey requires as part of every auto insurance policy and which pays for necessary treatment regardless of who caused the collision.

Initial treatment after a serious injury crash usually includes emergency extrication, imaging to check for internal bleeding or spinal injury, and a hospital stay before longer-term care even begins. PIP coverage in New Jersey has policy limits, commonly $15,000 or $250,000, depending on the plan selected, and severe injuries like these can push medical costs well past a lower limit fairly quickly.

Once PIP coverage is exhausted, a person may need to look to the at-fault driver's liability insurance or their own underinsured motorist coverage to cover remaining costs, and New Jersey's choice of tort option, either "limitation on lawsuit" or "no limitation," affects whether a claim for pain and suffering can move forward alongside medical expenses.

Sorting through which coverage applies and in what order can get complicated, and a car accident lawyer can help identify all available insurance sources while keeping New Jersey's two-year statute of limitations for personal injury claims in mind.

At Metro Law, we can help victims sort through PIP limits, liability coverage, and next steps after a serious highway wreck. We can review the available evidence on your crash and walk you through your possible next steps.
