Amsterdam, NY – Man Killed in E-Bike and Car Crash at Guy Park Ave & Wall St

Amsterdam, NY (May 7, 2026) – A 60-year-old man died after his e-bike was struck by a car on Tuesday, May 5, at the intersection of Guy Park Avenue and Wall Street in Amsterdam. The crash was reported at approximately 8:40 p.m.

When Amsterdam Police and emergency units arrived, they found a damaged e-bike in the intersection and Jose L. Lozada, 60, of Amsterdam unresponsive on the sidewalk. Officers began CPR immediately until fire department crews arrived and took over care.

Lozada was taken to St. Mary’s Hospital, where he later died from his injuries. Initial reports indicated the driver had left the scene, but the driver — a licensed motorist under 18 years old — returned within minutes and has been fully cooperative with authorities.

Investigators secured both the e-bike and the vehicle as evidence. A crash reconstruction was completed, and investigators canvassed the surrounding area for video footage and witness accounts.

Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the collision.

We extend our sincere condolences to the family and loved ones of Jose L. Lozada.

What Is a Wrongful Death Claim After a Fatal Crash in New York?Man Killed in E-Bike and Car Crash at Guy Park Ave & Wall St

A wrongful death claim is a legal action that allows surviving family members to seek compensation when a person dies as a result of someone else’s negligence. In New York, eligible parties typically include a spouse, children, or parents of the deceased, and the claim must be filed by the personal representative of the victim’s estate. If the facts of a crash show that another party’s careless or reckless conduct caused the death, a wrongful death claim may be an available option.

New York law allows families to seek compensation for several types of losses through a wrongful death claim. These can include funeral and burial expenses, medical bills incurred before death, and the financial contributions the victim would have made to the family over time. A wrongful death attorney can help determine which legal options apply based on the specific circumstances.

Timing matters in wrongful death cases. New York has a statute of limitations of two years from the date of death to file a wrongful death claim. Missing that deadline can bar a family from pursuing compensation entirely. Speaking with an attorney early helps ensure that evidence is preserved and that all available legal options remain open.
