What Types of Injuries Are Common in a Car Accident
Car accidents can cause a wide range of injuries, from minor cuts and bruises to life-threatening trauma. Common injuries include head and brain trauma, spinal cord damage, broken bones, internal bleeding, and soft tissue injuries like whiplash.
Soft tissue injuries are among the most frequently reported after a crash. These include muscle strains, ligament tears, and whiplash, which affects the neck and upper back. Many of these injuries do not show up on standard X-rays, which is why a thorough medical evaluation is important after any accident, even if a person feels fine at first.
New Jersey follows a no-fault insurance system, which means that after a crash, each driver typically turns to their own insurance policy first to cover medical expenses, regardless of who caused the accident.
However, when injuries meet a certain threshold of severity — such as permanent injury, significant scarring, or loss of a body function — a person may be eligible to step outside the no-fault system and pursue a claim against the at-fault driver. Understanding how these rules apply to a specific situation can be difficult without legal guidance.
A car accident lawyer can review the details of a case and explain what options may be available under New Jersey law. An attorney can help organize medical records, communicate with insurance companies, and clarify what compensation a person may be eligible to seek for medical bills, lost income, and other losses.
