Fatal Pedestrian Accidents in New Jersey

Bergen County, NJ – Pedestrian Fatally Struck by Vehicle near NJ-17 and Spring StStatistics show that between 2016 and 2020, over 870 pedestrian deaths were reported in the state of New Jersey. Unfortunately, this significant number of pedestrian deaths is mostly due to drivers who engage in negligent actions while behind the wheel. Driver errors continue to be the leading causes of fatal pedestrian accidents not just in New Jersey but across the United States.

There are many different types of driver behavior that can lead to fatal pedestrian crashes. One of the most common is failing to yield the right of way to pedestrians. This can happen when a driver is turning at an intersection and doesn’t see a pedestrian crossing or when a driver is pulling out of a driveway or parking space and doesn’t see a pedestrian on the sidewalk.

Another common cause of fatal pedestrian crashes is running red lights. This is especially dangerous because it often occurs at high speeds and gives pedestrians no warning that a vehicle is coming. Distracted driving is another leading cause of fatal pedestrian crashes. This can include anything from texting while driving to simply not paying attention to the road ahead.
